Real Bride Alishia

October is my absolute favorite month for weddings in Philadelphia area! The weather, light and colors are just prefect. And so was our stunning bride Alishia!

She and her bridal party were getting ready on this beautiful October morning in the lovely Hotel Monaco in Old City Philadelphia. We love doing makeup and hair in this hotel as they have just wonderful natural light coming in through their large windows.

Alisha and her friends and family were so much fun to work with! The bride was relaxed and glowing  and even though there was some rain it did not stop them from getting the most gorgeous photos!!!

I hope you enjoy them as much as we do!

Contouring - What do you really need to know.

What is countering? Do we all really need this in everyday application or is it something that we should save for special events only?

Thanks to the Kardashians and Instagram’s “makeup artists” everyone now asks to be “contoured”. Many makeup brands have come up with new contouring products and palettes with step-by-step instructions on how to get a slimmer nose and higher cheekbones.

With all the overwhelming information many of our clients are left quite confused and discouraged, also many never learn the proper techniques by trying to follow tips of “wanna-be” You Tube makeup artists who can really only do one kind of makeup – on themselves in very controlled environment (their bedroom).

The fact is that contouring techniques have existed and have been used by professional makeup artists for many, many years.  All the Old Hollywood movie starts and classic actresses were contoured; anchors on news channels and live stage performers. Contouring was developed to add shape to a face, correct it and to add dimension in a strong light environment and on camera.

Many of us makeup artist have also have been using this technique for our bridal and special event clients; again to shape, lift and add dimension to their faces as they are photographed.  With that being said we now see more and more women who heavily contour their faces even when they just go to a grocery store….

The purpose of contouring is to create a “natural” shadow on the face which will define or shape the features.

Be careful when choosing the product to contour with - many contouring products are the wrong shade! The color should be similar to your natural shadow. Take a look at yourself in the mirror without any makeup; what is the shade you see around your eyes, under your chin? This is the shade you should use to contour. With exception of East Indian or Black skin tones with a lot of warm undertones, most of us will be looking for a shade closer to a grey tone. I find that many of the contouring palettes are extremely warm toned! I also don’t recommend using a bronzer for contouring for the same reasons. You simply want to create a natural looking shadow on your face.

Some of my favorite contouring products include

 For creams: Smashbox

 For Powder: Charlotte Tilbury

When using a powdered contouring product use the lightest touch possible, I love a fan brush for that.

With cream products blend, blend and once more blend. You should not be able to see any harsh lines and again less is more.

In my opinion we really don’t need all of this for everyday makeup, you can get a great result with just a touch of bronzer and blush to give your face some dimension and life and leave the contouring for special occasions.

I am always a fan of natural, glowing faces!

BRIDAL BEAUTY LOOKBOOK - WEEK 10

I can't believe this is already a 10th look in our series!!!
I love red hair and freckles so needless to say I was very excited when we received Maddy's portfolio as a potential model for this shoot!
With such a classic features and fiery hair Maddy doesn't need a lot of makeup or complicated updos to look amazing.
Once again we kept her look very classic and elegant with a little modern twist on her hair style.

We created this incredible look by applying a light matte shadow all over the lid, we popped in a natural looking strip lashes and accented the eye with blown gel liner. Liquid foundation by Kevyn Aucoin, peachy pink blush and a light lip.

This look once again shows us that we really don't need a lot of makeup and many different shades on our eyes to make a statement. Choose one vocal point in your makeup and stick to it, while keeping everything polished and neural.

A 'movie star' worthy sexy smooth waves, a deep red lip and simple eye makeup. What can be better? I always tell my brides that you just can not go wrong with this look. Trends pass but  an elegant timeless makeup and hair will never go out of style.

I am so in love with the incredible detail on  this dress "Pemberly" by Carol Hannah.  The rhinestone shoulders are modern yet so red carpet. With a dress this stunning you do not need a lot of jewelry and hair accessories- just sparkly studs by Ti Adoro.

PHILADELPHIA WEDDING - MEGHAN AND ANDY

Meghan and Andy had a beautiful fall wedding at the John James Audubon Center in Mill Grove, Pa. The bride wanted a soft natural look for her wedding day makeup that would go well with the outdoors wedding, she wanted her cute freckles to show so I just lightly evened out her complexion with an airbrush makeup. We did a soft eye in pink, beige and brown tones to help her blue eyes stand out, a natural looking strip lash and just enough pop of color on the lips to tie it all together. The photos are by Shea Roggio

BRIDAL BEAUTY LOOKBOOK - WEEK 3

This week we are showing a bit more dramatic look for those brides who are not afraid of a bit of glam.
I did a smokey eye using the Shanghai Nights Eyeshadow Quad by Youngblood Mineral Cosmetics - used the Cherry Blossom all over the lid, then smoked it out with the Shitake and lined the eyes with a black pencil. Lost of mascara is a must for this look! Lips were accented by Smolder Lipstick by Youngblood as well. Model is also wearing a Mineral Primer, Liquid Mineral Foundation and Ultimate Concealer- all by Youngblood Mineral Cosmetics.

I swept the hair in a side messy low bun, which I think complimented this look perfectly! We accented it with this stunning hair pin by Untamed Petals ( available at Lovely bride Philadelphia)

BRIDAL BEAUTY LOOKBOOK - WEEK 1

Few months ago, while browsing through Pinterest, I had an idea to create some beautiful inspirational images showcasing stunning bridal makeup and hair as well as interesting jewelry and accessories. I approached my friend Carina Romano (Love Me Do Photography) if she would be interested in working with me on this project. She agreed and brought on board Ivy the owner of Lovely Bride Philadelphia.
I am so excited to introduce this series to the readers of my blog!

The first look I wanted to try was this very romantic yet elegant makeup with focus on a bright red lip, neutral eye and soft, dreamy loose waves.

The model's skin was primed with Mineral Primer and then evened out with a light application of Liquid Mineral Foundation ( I used stippling brush). Kelsey had this beautiful ivory skin tone which I wanted only enhance a bit with a Creme Blush in Taffeta lightly applied with fingertips. Her eyes were kept very neutral; I used the Shanghai Nights Eyeshadow Quad: I applied Bamboo and Cherry Blossom all over the lid and a very very light accent of Beige-ing in the crease. This model had naturally stunning long eyelashes so I only had to curl them and  applied few coats of mascara. I really wanted to create a strong brow so I filled it out with a brow pencil in taupe. The fiery lips were accented with Vixen Lipstick.

Model is wearing a Practically Perfect dress by Sarah Seven and a Flourish Caplet by Ivy & Aster.

We though that this delicate headpiece would be perfect compliment for this look! - by Untamed Petals.
The model was also wearing earrings by Ti Adoro (not shown on photos)

Philadelphia Bride - Leigh

Leigh and Thomas were married on a stunning Sunday at the end of May 2013. The ceremony was performed at Leigh's parent's home and the reception at the Bellevue in Philadelphia.
Photos by Marie Labbancz
Leigh wanted a very natural makeup with only few individual false eyelashes, a light lip and a touch of blush. For hair she opted for a loose relaxed wave.
Makeup was done by Aleksandra and hair by Jackie.
Here is the review she wrote for us on Wedding Wire:

"I can't overemphasize how much confidence I have in Aleks. Aleks is the best makeup artist, period. I had several trials with other of Philly's "leading" makeup artists, and was so frustrated by the experiences, I thought I might just try to do my own wedding makeup. I don't wear much makeup daily; I was looking for a natural look - I wanted to look like myself on my wedding day, just enhanced. But as I found out during my other trials before Aleks (and having my makeup professionally done a dozen times in the past), that seems to be very difficult for people! Every other makeup artist gave me a mask of foundation and their standard template of makeup - read: covering up all your skin and re-adding to make it a face, and insisting that I needed a certain amount of eyeliner or fake lashes to "show up in pictures" or "last the day" or "you're just not used to seeing yourself with makeup," etc.

Aleks was the best, and the only one who was different. She was my third makeup trial attempt for my wedding. She really listened to what I wanted, and progressively added each make up element conservatively to see if I liked it before moving on. This was so key, because often you see the whole outcome at once at the end, or several parts at once, and it may be hard to zero in on what you don't like about/what's off. She knows when to use makeup, and most importantly when NOT to - based on an eye for what looks best to enhance each person.

For hair, Jackie did a great job turning my normal mane of long curls into modern, big soft curls down-'do. She was very patient and worked with me to achieve my vision, even when I was struggling with how to communicate it. She also did a great job on my mom's hair, which is short and thin, and she worries about it breaking. Jackie listened and respectfully maneuvered my mom's 'do, taking in to account her concerns about the fragility of her hair."
